12/01/10 - Rain and storms and floods... oh my!!

Mood: Worried right now, with a hint of paranoia. Floods... gotta stop watching the news... it's like some crazy natural disaster movie, except for real!!! I cannot believe Brisbane CBD is under water, literally and for real. My dad had to go home early today, lucky he made it back before the mayhem started, yikes!! The water has risen to be RIGHT UNDER the Good Will Bridge right now... that's pretty damn high. Seriously high. Though while this is such a scary and massive disaster for everyone, I think under the circumstances everyone affected by the floods right now are doing amazing. Keep your chin up guys, and we'll be holding onto our hats for the next few days... eep!!! Here's hoping the worst of it is over... rain rain GO AWAY COME AGAIN IN TEN YEARS TIME PLEASE! We've had enough for one decade thanks.
Eating: Just ate 4-5 Hello Pandas. Shoot me, I'm not going to the gym tonight for fear I might get flooded in or washed away. My gym is right near the Currumbin Creek, so should flash flooding occur (and pray it doesn't...) my lil car will get washed away like all the videos we've watched, and I might too, right in the middle of my step class. I figure one night away won't hurt. Better to be safe than swimming upstream under a car. I will go to yoga tomorrow.
Drinking: Cup of tea while I watched the updates on Channel 9 for the floods. Errrgh it's so scary!!!
Watching: Well didn't I just answer my own question there? News updates on all the flooding. Again, scary!!!
Listening to: Triple J-ness downstairs. Had the news on but figured that was wasting power while I potter away upstairs. Not worth it really.
Just finished: having a shower. I really must remember to STOP WEARING TIGHT SLEEVED TSHIRTS in really humid weather. Stupid stinky sweat soaking into the sleeves and then hanging around ALL DAY. And yes people, I thoroughly apply deoderant every day. I had to keep my arms down all afternoon for fear of lifting up and passing someone out with the smell of deoderant, wetness and sweat. You know you've been there before. I'm just putting it out there so people nod and go... "yup... been there before... heh heh, but like I'd admit that..."
After this, I'm going to: do some tidying I guess. Maybe make dinner. Mr. Harris is out as of the moment and I'm burning a long awaiting DVD series for him. Maybe we can watch it tonight! Around the World in 80 Gardens - looks like an amazing TV series... better than watching depressing news or crappy sitcoms.
One wish for the day:
Simple. Floods, water and all the damage you've caused - please go away. You're just being a pain in the arse. Enough is enough.

So work happened today, and all day conversations just revolved around... guess what... wa-hey!

~The floods~

All day we were sitting, eyeing the BOM weather radar, watching the clouds circle, move down, around and in from the sea. Watched videos showing cars being swished away by rising waters - yikes!! Chatted to nearly every customer about the weather - well, they chatted to me. It's the first point of conversation. Gotta love that small talk eh?

Got mildly panicked when I heard my boss's missus evacuated out of Brisbane CBD, called up Mum and checked to see if all was well (my dadsy works in Brissie too...). Luckily, there was a lot of rain but no flooding where my family live. Phew! All my family were safe and have been doing pretty well all day today. Dad got sent home early too and has the day off tomorrow, lucky bugger (and yes he called up to gloat earlier)! My little sister has relocated her guinea pigs from their cubby house to her house... not that that's really much better as it's still ground level but having them inside rests one's conscience - well, for us 'little animal enthusiasts' anyway. Good to have everything in the one area.

Just think of what a guinea pig is: eyes, mouth and a big fat belly. That don't do well when it comes to swimming. Unless they would float from the fat, who knows? Don't want to try...

I am contemplating putting my boys upstairs tonight, in the off chance we have flash flooding down here... I would hate to wake up the next morning and find all our downstairs just an oversized wading pool of water. Piggies don't swim. I will think whether it will be worth moving them... maybe just set up a spare pen in case? I'm thinking out loud here...

Anyway, that was the day, nothing grand. Did some artworky stuffs, set up a customised invoice, a flyer here, sending off business cards there... all standard stuff. Had sushi and yummy juice with orange/apple/pineapple/ginger for lunch. YUMMY! Am contemplating saving up to get a juicer that I will use once and lose interest in. Didn't eat a sweet treat all day, except for the miniscule Hello Pandas from before. Thats it until dinner though! I CAN DO THIS!!!

Loads of cloud and drizzle down our way today but nothing gargantually downpoury. Let's hope it stays that way!

To all of you in South-East QLD tonight. Please be careful. Have a backup plan, have an evacuation plan, be safe, get food supplies ready, stay together and keep your eyes on the news updates.

We will all get through this, just gotta wait it out!!

Until tomorrow, when I will either be blogging or bobbing... or blub blub blubbing...

~ Peace, Love & Mungbeans ~

  1. been watching the news since about 10am. its horrible. and listening to police scanners, the amount of fake calls for help was disgusting! ppl saying theyre stuck on their roofs and the water lapping at the edge of the roof only to have the SES fly out and there be no water around the house at all. those ppl should be found and dropped in the middle of the disaster zone, to see what its really like. using up the resources when others ACTUALLY need them. ryan (my bro) almost got stuck in caboolture (he was working out there), was one of the last cars allowed out before it was completely cut off from the world. so much of it is under water, the photos are horrible. my family out there are safe, so thats what counts.
    Wednesday will be bad...
Thursday is the D-Day. thats when the full extent will be known. unless it continues to rain heavily. I feel for all the ppl near the brissie river on flood alert. when the deluge from wivenhoe dam gets here. all hell will break loose. thankfully redcliffe is high and dry. everything is screwed. gunna be a while before everything is back to anything near normality. What a great start to the year....
glad to hear you guys are 'dry' down there, compared to us up here anyway. hasnt rained here for a little while. BOM shows the massive storm is dissapating, but i know its not gone.
    stay safe!
